Players like playing for him, management has a love affair with him, he has won 2 World Series titles and has made the playoffs in 5 out of 6 years as Red Sox manager.
He’s good with the media and always seems to say the right thing. Some fans LOATHE him (which is the case with EVERY Red Sox manager since the dawn of time) but for the most part, Terry Francona seems to have staying power.
The reason most managers get fired is because either they “lose” their players or they have a riff with management. Those are two areas that Terry Francona has in his back pocket (fyi, word is that Bobby Cox is retiring because he doesn’t like the way management handled the John Smoltz situation).
The only thing stopping Terry Francona from being a saint in this town are those nit-picking, know-it-all types of fans who think they can do a better job than a manager who has won 2 World Series and only missed the playoffs once.
Get used to him, know-it-alls. Terry Francona aint goin' nowhere.
