At the Bruins Media Day press conference yesterday Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs said, “my ambition is to win a Stanley Cup…and will be disappointed if there is anything less than that.”
Jeremy Jacobs has gotten some bad press in the past ( he earned a top spot in ESPN's 2002 poll of "The Worst Owners in Sports" and #7 on their 2005 "Greediest Owners In sports" list just to name a few) but lets give him credit. The man has assembled a great front office.
Peter Chiarelli has done an above average job as general manager of the Bruins and Claude Julien has done an amazing job as head coach of the Bruins. Hell, he lead the Bruins to the best record in the Eastern Conference with 116 points and second best record in the league (only one point behind the San Jose Sharks for best record in the NHL).
Would the season be a disappointment if the Bruins don’t win the Stanley Cup? Its tough to say. When you lead the Eastern Conference in points and your head coach with the “Coach Of The Year,” your goalie wins the Vezina Trophy and your best defenseman wins the Norris Trophy all in the same year, then yea I think its safe to say you expect this team to at least compete for a Stanley Cup.
And to his credit, Jeremy Jacobs is speaking like an owner who is in touch with his team and actually cares. Is it an act? Probably. Do I care? No. Because he is saying things that this team needs to hear from its owner. Even if he’s faking it.
