According to multiple sources, John Lackey took a physical Monday with the Red Sox, which is typically the last step before signing a with a team.
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com was the first to report this.
It is expected that he will sign a five-year deal with the Red Sox worth approx $82.5 million.
Signing a front line pitcher like John Lackey could be the first in a series of dominos to fall.
At the very least, this gives the Red Sox the flexibility to include Clay Buchholz in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez.
The Red Sox now have six starting pitchers:
Beckett
Lackey
Lester
Buchholz
Matsusaka
Wakefield
The only untouchable is Tim Wakefield and the only unwantable is Matsusaka.
It now seems very likely that the Sox will include Buchholz in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez or potentially include Beckett in a trade for Miguel Cabrera.
After weeks of talking about signing Jason Bay, the Red Sox came out of left field (no pun intended) with this John Lackey signing and it simply doesnt make sense...unless there is another shoe to fall.
Stay tuned....
