Padres Would Make Trade If It Included Buchholz and Ellsbury

According to the Boston Globe:

Padres GM Jed Hoyer is asking for Clay Buchholz and righthanded pitching prospect Casey Kelly or outfielder Ryan Westmoreland. The Red Sox, at least for the time being, won’t include Kelly or Westmoreland.

And today Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox are working hard to get Adrian Gonzalez and that the Padres would make the deal if it included Clay Buchholz AND Jacoby Ellsbury.

Considering the Sox have Hermida slated for left and possibly Cameron slated for center, a deal that would include Buchholz and Ellsbury makes sense. But does Theo have a hot trigger finger?

Stay tuned.......

  2. Ellsbury is one of the most exciting and dynamic players in the game....BUT Gonzalez would basically be Manny Ramirez redux...Im torn.

  3. It's ridiculous that Epstein/the Sox front office would value keeping Westmoreland over keeping Ellsbury. If they end up willing to trade Ellsbury to the Padres but refuse to trade Westmoreland instead, then it is one of the most ridiculous trades in history. Why on Earth would you value a 19-year-old low A prospect over a 26-year-old established Major Leaguer? Sure, Westmoreland could develop into a great player, but he is several years away from the Majors and there is absolutely no guarantee he pans out. Ellsbury, meanwhile, is still young, and he isn't just any starting outfielder - he will bat near .300, has decent pop for a leadoff man, plays excellent defense and will lead the league in stolen bases.

I'm all for a Buchholz/Westmoreland trade for Gonzalez, but a Buchholz/Ellsbury trade would really, really anger me. Mike Cameron is a good signing but he does not under ANY means make Ellsbury expendable.

  4. Ellsbury is one of the best in the game. I enjoy watching him play at Fenway. He brings a lot of excitement. I would hate to see him traded. I think the Sox would be smart to hold on to him.

  7. I can't believe any plyer is worth trading away two of our most promising players. I hope to see both Ellsbury and Buckholtz in Red Sox uniforms for years to come

  8. Rosenthal is an idiot...he only reports either what he makes up or what he reads from the likes of Peter Gammons...he couldn't sniff out a story using a dog.
