This “run prevention” concept kinda reminds me of the “bullpen by committee” experiment a few years ago.
Remember that? On paper it made a lot of sense. Throw out a different “closer” each night, that way the opponent cant really prepare for your closer because they never know who they will see.
In theory, it made all the sense in the world. You’d never have to worry about burning out your “closer” and you never have to worry about him going into a funk.
Also remember that in the real world it just didn’t work. A lot of things make sense on paper but just don’t translate into the real world.
Today we will see the Red Sox take the field for the first time this spring and to be honest with you, this “run prevention” experiment scares the hell out of me.
I just don’t think it will translate into the real world. And you know what? If/when it doesn’t, Theo Epstein is going to get destroyed by Red Sox Nation. They will want blood.
And thanks to our local sports radio stations and blogs like yours truly, it will be a blood filled summer….if this experiment fails.
