Red Sox Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia Has Longest Name In History Of Major League Baseball

Heres an interesting tidbit on information. Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has the longest last name in the history of major league baseball, with 14 letters.

Eat your heart out Carl Yastrzemski and Nomar Garciaparra.

Yastrzemski and Garciaparra hold the Red Sox record for longest last name each with 11 letters...until Saltalamacchia makes his Red Sox debut.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is tied with William Van Landingham for the longest full name in the history of major league baseball (20 letters).

Anyway, Theo Epstein has had a hard-on for Jarod Saltalamacchia for a couple of years now. Epstein has tried to trade for Saltalamacchia for the past two seasons, but each time he inquired about Saltalamacchia the Rangers wanted Clay Buchholz to be included in the deal.

This year, Theo got Saltalamacchia for pennies on the dollar. The Red Sox gave up minor league first baseman Chris McGuiness and minor league pitcher Roman Mendez.

Saltalamacchia is only 25 years old and has tremendous upside. His one flaw is that he has had issues this season throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

Yea, so Theo Epstein once again acquired a player from the blemished bin with the hopes of fixing him.

Who knows if it will work. The Brad Penny experiment was a bust, the John Smoltz experiment was a bust and so far the Jeremy Hermida experiment is a bust (he got sent to Pawtucket this weekend).

But hey, they didnt give much to get him. And he has a fun last name (Im rolling my eyes).
