I waited a day to write about this Tyler Seguin trade because I didnt want to simply write my knee-jerk reaction and sound like an asshole. I wanted to sit on it for a bit and digest it. Well, I did. And it still sucks.
If youre a Bruins fan, how can you not be pissed off about this trade? Peter Chiarelli traded away a 21 year old kid simply because he was “immature.” That is pure bullshit.
Above and beyond the lackluster performance on the ice during the Stanley Cup playoffs, there were concerns about Seguin’s activity off the ice.
According to sources around the team, Seguin was out late in Toronto during the road trip to play the Leafs in the first round of the playoffs and the team had to hold a sit-down with the immature forward about his commitment to the team.
Seguin showed up each day at the Air Canada Centre wearing the same clothes for three straight days and played badly in Games 3 and 4 of the first round against Toronto.
And according to the Boston Herald, "Seguin crossed the line this season with reckless partying. It apparently got so bad that during the playoffs, the Bruins ordered Seguin to live in a hotel, where a guard was hired to make sure he stayed in his room."
Jesus Christ, talk about an overreaction. The Bruins front office should have calmed the hell down and let the dude grow out of this. He is 21 years old for Christ's sake. He will eventually outgrow this immaturity. If he was in his thirties and still acting like this—hell, if he was 25 and still acting like this—then sure.
But at 21, this is what you get. And the fact that Peter Chiarelli hired a guard to babysit him and then traded him because he was "unprofessional" is in itself unprofessional and borderline disgraceful.
Chiarelli has done a lot of things right in his time with the Bruins and he has made a lot of smart moves. But the way he handled Tyler Seguin was just friggin stupid. I don’t give a shit what they got in return. You don’t trade a 21 year old with the kind of upside that Tyler Seguin has because he's "immature." That is idiotic and just bad business.
When we look back at this trade a few years from now, Tyler Seguin will probably have outgrown his immaturity issues just like Patrick Kane did in Chicago. He will have won at least one Hart Trophy, at least one scoring title and Bruins fans will be left asking, "why the frig did the Bruins ever trade this guy."
By then, Peter Chiarelli and Claude Julien will be gone and Bruins fans will be left feeling the way we did after watching Joe Thornton get traded to the Sharks only to win the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Trophy there. All the while, the Dallas Stars will be enjoying the second coming of Mike Modano. That sucks.
