FINAL: Red Sox 7 Tampon Bay Rays 3. The Red Sox Now Have A Season High 9.5 Game Lead In The AL East...And I Think I Just Had A Sportsgasm.
The Rays are the Red Sox closest competition for the AL East crown...and they are now 9.5 games back. In his series, the Red Sox have made them look like more like assholes than contenders.
The Red Sox beat them 2-0 on Tuesday night and last night Mike Carp hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the tenth inning to give the Red Sox a 7-3 win. The 9.5 game lead is the Red Sox biggest lead of the season and the magic number is now down to 8. And I think I just gave myself another sportsgasm.
Anyway, so about the game. The Red Sox were up 3-1 when Brandon Workman came in and gave up a run in the 7th and another in the 8th to piss away the lead. But in the end, it didnt matter.
Mike Carp came in to pinch hit for Jonny Gomes in the 10th with the bases loaded and hit a friggin bomb. It was the first grand slam in extra innings for a Red Sox player since Dwight Evans did it in 1989. Anytime I can toss Dwight Evans' name around is a good day. Carp now has two home runs and nine RBIs as a pinch hitter.
Koji Uehara pitched yet another perfect inning in the ninth and has now retired a Red Sox team record 34 consecutive hitters. This guy has been un friggin real this season. Just imagine what a shit show it would have been if Joel Hanrahan or Andrew Bailey had been coming in to close out games all season.
When all is said and done, this season has to go down as one of the most improbable seasons in Red Sox history. I mean, no one foresaw Uehara doing what he has done. No one saw this team running away with the AL East in September. Okay, I have to calm down. I really have to calm down.
